Income related ESA migration to UC was created by Ninko
Hi,
I've recently migrated from income related ESA to UC. My understanding was that ESA would stop after getting UC but I still seem to be getting ESA which is then just taken off of UC.
Is that correct, as I just don't understand all this!?

Hi Ninko,

I don't have much knowledge with the ESA process, so I've approved your post in the hope that one of our claimants can hopefully answer this, or another mod when they're next online.

Chris.

Exactly how much ESA are you now getting? Many people getting a dual Contributory & Income ESA claim falsely believe they are getting income-only ESA due to misleadingly worded letters the DWP send out.

Quick test - Do you get a P60U each year showing ESA as taxable income with "ESA500" as the PAYE reference? Also lookup your bank statements from the whole month of last December and see if one ESA payment was £10 higher than usual. Only Contributory ESA is taxable / gives the £10 Xmas bonus (Income by itself doesn't), so if you see that then the continued payments are some form (old style or New style) of Contributory ESA.

Hi a2012

You are right about the notoriously misleading and in some cases just plain daft letters generated by the computers at the ESA department. It is a sure sign of Contributions Based ESA if you get a P60U form once a year. Though you may also get an Income Based ESA top up.
You also only get the Xmas £10 bonus with Conts ESA and not Income Based ESA. But you will also get it if you receive Income Based ESA with PIP, DLA or some of the special pensions.

Hope this helps
David

Hi,
I think I was getting both types of ESA by the looks of it.
The reason I'm asking is because ever since migrating to UC my council tax has gone from £0 a month to over £80 a month. Is that because I'm getting contribution ESA now?
I really don't understand all this!

You would have been on ESA CB with IR top up now you have migrated the CB part of ESA will be converted to NS ESA which is £276.40 a fortnight and the UC deduction is £598.86 per month ESA is a weekly benefit and there are 4.3 weeks in a month. UC is paid monthly. It known as a dual claim.
