Terrified of sanction. was created by D Andrew
Hi,

My work coach has signed me up to a course starting on Monday 14th September and running until 2nd October. This is what has been written in my work plan:

“Activities

I’ve agreed with my work coach that I’ll:

Engage and attend with Voncap Recruitment for the Principles of Business Administration SWAP being held virtually. The dates of this training are 14 September to 2 October. This will improve my chances of finding paid work. I understand my benefit may be affected if I do not carry out the required actions by 2 October 2026.”

I am currently very unwell with gut issues. I have called my GP practice and they said I can come in tomorrow morning for an appointment.

If I receive a fit note from my GP stating that I am unwell and unable to attend the course, for example, if the doctor says I am unfit from 10th September until late September or early October, would I still be at risk of being sanctioned?

Kind regards

James

Hi James

Firstly don't feel threatened by a Work Coach. They cannot issue a sanction in the same way that a Police officer can issue a speeding fine or parking ticket. They have to fill out a Sanction Form which then goes to an independent decision maker ( DM ) in the DWP who decided if you the claimant had " good cause ".
Secondly this statement " Engage and attend with Voncap Recruitment for the Principles of Business Administration SWAP being held virtually" has to have been included in your Claimant Commitment. You should have discussed it with the Work Coach and agreed to participate.
Did you click the green button on your UC account agreeing to the above Claimant Commitment?
