Rules On Carers Allowance was created by Bill
Hi,
My wife and myself are befuddled by eligability for benefits and cant seem to untangle the information we read but hopefully the Mods can help us with this please?
Is there still a Carers Allowance and if so, what are the rules on being eligable? Can my wife get it for me, as she is my full time carer?
Thank you, in advance
Bill

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Yes, Carers Allowance is still an available benefit, have a look at the following site
www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/Mo...sAllowance/index.htm

Hi Gordon,
Many thanks for that. We have checked out the link and are no doubt quite thick because we dont understand if my wife does get Carers Allowance, would it effect the fact that I get IB and IS?
We find it so difficult to understand what is what, for example I get IB & IS for both of us, I am paid the small amount of each but it includes my wife.
Does that mean that if my wife gets Carers Allowance the amount of IB or IS we get will be reduced?
Sorry to ask such difficult questions but we truly cant understand the rules!
Thanks again Gordon

I would expect it to affect any IS payment you are currently getting as it will be counted as income, but you should check with your local CAB or Welfare Rights office as to the amounts, as they will be able to give you a proper estimate, which we cannot do on the forum.

My advice would be to 'phone the Carers Allowance (CA) office based in Preston, Lancashire on: 0845 608 4321 and they will tell you all you need to know about CA, and whether you qualify.
Cut out the middle man
