Advice please was created by Chrissie301
Hi, I'm in the Support Group for ESA and am being interviewed for a job. I have realised that if successful then I will be getting £129.60 a week and will not be paying any tax or National Insurance. I have researched this and contacted Job Centre Plus and the National Insurance helpline, but no-one can tell me that by taking this job, if offered, my National Insurance record will be protected by the credits that will be made as my salary will be above the Lower Earnings Level but below the Primary Threshold for National Insurance. I will probably need to apply for Contribution based ESA again in the future and need to know that I would still be eligible.
I hope this makes sense
Best wishes to all on this great site

you need expert advise but i thought that you only pay NI if you earn enough thus being on low income means ther will be none paid unless you work enough hours on low paid and get working tax credits then they might be credited call the ni helpline

I think that if you go on the Tax site, there are certain headings that do mention the guidlines for earning over the minimal but below the basic, etc. There are certainly cirmcumstances where you do get credited NI conts when on a low wage, but ask for more detailed info from the Tax office(if you can get through).

I worked for 20hrs per week, and earned £5hr. I paid 85p N.I., if this job was to prove too much for you, you would find yourself going back on to the assessment phase for ESA, another Atos medical would take place etc etc....it takes about 6 weeks to sort out any working tax credits you may be entitled to, and other costs like housing benefit, council tax etc, would all take time. You would be eligible for ESA, but you would have to provide sick notes to cover the 13 week assessment phase, I know this because I've just gone through the whole thing myself.
Good luck with your job.
