Permitted Work was created by Rosered
Does anyone know where under the permitted work rules you can sell your own belongings on ebay or amazon.

Is this classed as permitted work or not. If you don't buy anything in for resale and it is just a matter of offloading your own personal possessions at less than what it cost you to purchase them in the first place are you really making a profit and are you working?

Also do you have to inform the DWP.

Hi Rosered,

I suspect this has come up on the forum before.

There are no permitted work rules relating specifically to Ebay or Amazon.

If you are simply selling unwanted possessions, this is very unlikely to count as remunerative work.

If you are trading, however, then it would count as work which would need to be declared. So, if you are buying things with the intention of reselling them to make a profit that would be something you would need to declare. Such trading could come within the permitted work rules, depending on hours and income.

the tax man has issued guidance on selling on ebay and setting up your own web sites

the work you do for your employer in return for payment (or where you would expect to be paid) such as wages
any ‘payment in kind’ (for example groceries for a person who works as a shop assistant, or farm produce for a farm labourer)
If you're self-employed, paid work means any work you do for payment (or would expect to be paid) or profit.
