self employed was created by cde11
Hi

My brother has just had a heart attack, he is self employed and has been for years, can he claim any benefits whilst he can't run his business?

He should be able to claim ESA in the usual manner, by obtaining a sick note and phoning the claims line.

Hi,

Just to add to Dereks post, it may also depend on his National Insurance Record and what class of contributions he has paid.

There is more here:

www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/benefits.htm

He may become entitled to certain Income Related Benefits but that is subject to income and savings rules.
