Thanks Dave, that's why the internet search was difficult...

the child trust fund has/is ending and there is an ISA scheme being set up in Nov '11.

neither is what I wanted, as you point out, as I just want the money to be 'kept safe' until the children are 21 respectively.

You and Gordon have helped me decide what to do and I am very appreciative!
