A disabled man who fears he will lose his benefits having been declared fit to work has started a hunger strike.

Christos Palmer, who has thyroid disease and clinical depression, says he was told he was fit for work by Atos Healthcare.

The 32-year-old has now begun a week long protest and hunger strike outside Department for Work and Pensions office on St Agnes Street, Cardiff.

Christos said the new assessment method was “hurting people”.

He was initially found unfit to work under last year but that decision was reversed after a re-assessment.

Christos appealed the decision immediately but said: “I’m really worried about my money stopping completely.

“I don’t know how I’d cope. I’d go to pieces, I think.”

The Canton resident said he will sit outside the government building from 8am to 4pm until Friday and will not eat all week.
