Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

Trying all day to speak to DWP about my pension, and it is sooooooo frustrating, I have waited an extra 6 years for my pension as the government moved the goalposts. the number I have been ringing all day is 0800 7310175.   May I suggest a queuing system that with indicate how many callers are waiting in line, then one can hold or give up? not just an engaged tone.

    Telephone: 0800 169 0310

This is deliberate nothing to do with lack of staff. They are creating problems and failing to resolve them blaming computers which is absolute garbage. The Civil service need a rocket up them.

4 times I've tried to change my address and been cut off while on hold each time ranging from 43 minutes to 56 - it's pathetic - well over 3 hours for a 2 minute job and still not done it

Tried calling ESA 0800 169 0310. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been on hold for over an hour still no luck. Ended up sending a letter to ESA two weeks ago asking for response. Still no reply via letter when asked. Just trying to phone to make sure they have updated their records. Really awful.

How long are you expected to wait to speak to someone about ESA?  I put the phone down after waiting an hour on 3 occasions over the last week. 3 hours waiting.  A simple call back service would be helpful.

80 minutes on ESA line as notified that cost of living payment going up in April - but same letter showns nothing about severe disability payments, they seem to have dropped off - no explanation. Agent couldn't see any reason, thinks it's an admin error, passed to the team, who will be in touch...

I have called every day last week (I do not have an account as I am not the client - and the client is deaf so cannot call on my behalf - and they are working too - not easy to make long calls if you are working!!!) but the award is paid to me - so I can only use the call facility. ..... Called everyday last week 2 to 3 times a day.... and Each time I have waited a minimum of 45 minutes!!! and had to call off because I also have to work.  It really is unbelievable........( I am awaiting payment for work I do at weekends) but I have still not been paid for November.  It is the end of January ...I got through beginning(4th) January and was told the claim for payment would be paid to me very soon (it was due to the postal strike).  I have a tax bill coming out tomorrow and bills to pay and on my knees extremely stressful and unnecessary.  Why cant they have a 'chat' facility would be far easier I'm sure.  Im at my wits end. What concerns me is that if a payment is rejected to a fault i form filling I have no way of finding out (this happened to me before) Whatever happened to making a simple phone call????!!!!

On hold for nearly an hour to speak about ESA on behalf of my disabled daughter. Disgustingly poor service.

I've tried to call the ESA helpline 3 times this week. Over 3 hours of waiting in total. I have a simple question to ask and all this time I am losing benefit that I am entitled to. It's soul destroying and the continuous tinny music makes me feel anxious, not calm. It's just appalling.

I need an urgent reassessment since my conditions have worsened since covid with some treatments stopping all together and I have a heart problem now too. I’m a disabled RAF veteran and now single mother of four. I need help and I can never get through. I have tried so many times, just to order a new assessment form. I am sure this is happening because if we give up, they save money. can someone make it possible to order a simple form online. Please

I had been asked to ring about ESA. I spent 90 minutes yesterday and was then cut off. Currently on hold again today and it’s up to 70 minutes so far!! Absolutely madness. If I don’t contact them I will be penalised so it’s a very vicious circle!!
