Which DWP number are you struggling to get through on?  Benefits and Work wants to find out more about which numbers have the longest wait times and also whether things improve with the introduction of ‘almost human’ AI chatbots answering calls.

Back in February, the DWP announced it was introducing Conversational Platform software to answer telephone calls.  The DWP described the voices claimants would hear as ‘almost human’.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the following month the DWP announced that it was closing 41 offices and that some staff would be redeployed to different roles.  The jobs affected are ‘back of house’ such as staff who answer telephones.

It may well be the case that wait times fall as a result of the introduction of AI.  But it’s also possible that the actual responses callers get will be of little help because they are simply talking to sophisticated FAQ software which can only give pre-programmed responses and can’t deal with follow-up questions.

As a first step we need to find out which are the numbers that you struggle with most and is it solely that no-one answers or do you get unhelpful responses, get cut-off before you’ve finished, get offers to call you back that never happen or get answers that are just plain wrong.

And do you know if you are talking to a human?

Some of the most likely suspects are:

Universal Credit helpline

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

PIP enquiry line

Telephone: 0800 121 4433

Jobcentre Plus for ESA change of circumstances

Telephone: 0800 169 0310

But there may be other numbers related to the benefits we deal with that are a problem for you.    Please let us know your experiences in the comments section below.

What to do if you can't get through

Some of our members have successfully got their MP's office involved when they have been unable to contact the DWP themselves. If you do try this, please let us know how it goes by leaving a comment.  There's more details here.

The response from DWRP is apalling. I have tried many times to inquire about my pension. After having had to make my selections, eith I am on hold for more than 30 minutes, OR the line is cut off. How can I find an office close to me? Some years of my contributions are not even listed on the wesite, and therefore I am unable to even get a forecast
A very poor service. The amount oif money the tax payer contributes is not reflected in the service DWP provide

Over an hour of waiting and losing my nerve to stay on the PIP line. I'm sure many of us have phone call related anxiety and this is meant to be a compassionate lifeline to help us deal with these challenges not to create insurmountable ones. Contacting PIP is the only way I can ensure I continue to receive it. Being unable to contact them has me in a flood of tears and anxiety before I've even spoken to anyone.

Yes absolutely awful to deal with. They’re quick enough to ring you though if there’s an issue .
No other way of contact - no email address . Will need to write to them .

I have just tried ringing my local Job centre plus in Aylesbury as i havent received one of my cold weather payments due today. I have rang four times and been on the calls for nearly an hour each time. This is an unacceptable service.  I am extremely worried when i am moved from ESA to universal credit as i dont own a smart phone and this means they are uncontactable by normal phone. I will end up with permanent sanctions just through poor communication

@Holly have had the same and finally got through today after 50mins waiting mind just to notify postal strikes meant their PIP review letter dated 4th Dec was only delivered 21st Dec and return date of 4th Jan is impossible, so they extended it til 4th Feb but what a waste of time money resources on this alone when told ignore the generic reminder letters that will be sent, waste of taxpayers money!!

Started calling 3 hours ago. Every 60 minutes it cuts off. Absolute joke. I only need a copy of a letter. Service is atrocious. That’s a full day my client should be socialising. Disgusting

I'm going to write to them. Actually on paper. Send it recorded delivery signed for. They can't dispute that.
They want us to give up. Well, I won't.

Phoned PIP line to get reassessment. Answered after 55 minutes waiting. Did the reassessment. Put through to discuss the written reasoning section, and it cut off! I phoned back, another 40 minutes waiting. They put me though again, and I've now been waiting over an hour and 15 minutes. It's 5.25pm. Have they gone? Should I continue to hold? It's a total nightmare.

Phoned the ESA number to tell them of a change in my mum’s address. In the queue and on hold for 1 hr 10 mins before a man called ‘Lee’ answers the phone, introduces himself and cuts me off. Absolutely fuming!
