I was on the phone to my mother a little while ago, and we were talking about this - and I went through a number of reasons for why the benefits' bill has increased so much, starting with the closure of so many long stay hospitals and residential homes and coming up to the current time with so many young people who were adversely affected by the Covid crisis and are still struggling to get any help with their problems. She said I should put it in a letter and send it to someone in charge. But your post has firmed my resolve to do just this - and send it to our current pm, plus Rachel Reeve, and West Streeting and probably the BBC.

I shall keep my fingers crossed that I can remember even half of what I said at the time, but I will send that letter.

I had considered emailing my MP and then thought, 'oh, what's the use?'.
Now - thanks to your encouragement - I have sent her (Labour, but party-line) a short but personal email.
