How do you think Labour will treat disabled claimants if, as seems increasingly likely, they form the next government?  Will they be better or worse than the Conservatives?

Last week’s Labour party manifesto left our readers divided on what the future might be like for disabled claimants under Labour.  The document made few references to benefits and gave no clues as to what its attitude would be to major issues such as ESA to UC migration, proposed Green paper changes to PIP or how exactly the WCA might be reformed.

Many readers felt that Labour was just being cautious, because any hint of being soft on claimants would be jumped on by the right-wing press.

Others thought that Labour were saying little because they do not have anything positive to say to disability benefits claimants.  Some think there is little difference between the two parties and some commentors even believe that Labour would be worse news for claimants than the Conservatives.

Certainly, the manifesto could have offered some hope to, for example Carer’s Allowance claimants. A change to the current cliff edge earnings limit would not have major cost implications.

And, to ensure claimant safety, Labour could have offered to look again at the very tight ESA to UC migration deadline imposed on the DWP by the Conservatives.  Delaying the transfer would not cost anything, given that it was previously delayed to 2028 to save money.

Labour could also have stated in the manifesto that they would look at the Green paper proposals for PIP, but that it was unlikely that a voucher system or a catalogue would play any part in any future plans.  Again, this would not have had cost implications.

None of these undertakings would have offered much in the way of ammunition to the right wing press, but all of them would have reassured claimants that Labour would give them some respite from the current relentless attacks.

On the other hand, no part of Labour’s plans include cutting benefits in order to raise cash for other purposes, such as tax cuts.

And, whilst they have said they will replace or reform the WCA, they have not suggested that they will reform PIP.

So, if benefits will play a major part in deciding who you will vote for, readers will have to make an educated guess as to what Labour might do based on minimal information.

Knowing what other claimants are thinking may be helpful in reaching a decision.

    I don't trust any of them but Labour can't be any worse than Torys. (Or can it)
    So Labour would get my vote. 

    The Greens have no chance of getting in even though their Manifesto sounded the best for

    Claimants ,in my opinion a wasted vote.

    Starmer is not showing himself to be a potential leader of any integrity.  He does not live up to his word.  The manifesto says nothing on disability as they know the bedrock of Labour supporters will not like the stance conservatives take it and at this point they are only after votes. Once in, they will have run of the power system and then we will see.  Disability is always the easy football as well as education for politicians to kick about causing damage they will never be held accountable for.

    I’ve cancelled my membership of the Labour Party. I’ve also emailed the prospective Labour candidate for Penistone and Stockbridge of my concerns but have had no reply.

    Who ever gets in we will be lucky not to lose money. Conservatives want to take away more money.

    Labour will not help us very much. 

    Lib dems. Very quiet as they know they will not get in.

    Green party. Sound positive but where is money coming from ? To pay for 5% 

    Reform party. Want immigration sorted. Will force unfit back into work.

    So labour looks best.

    Labour continually use the phrase “Working People”. They have no use for those that can’t work. Rachel Reeves has famously said that Labour would be harder on benefit claimants than the Tories are. Keir Starmer’s Labour has moved so far to the right, that I believe people receiving benefits will be in just as much peril as they are now, under the Tories. Unless there is some massive scandal involving Labour, between now and the General Election, Labour are going to be the new government. This will be of little comfort to the Disabled, and the Physically or Mentally ill in this country. ☹️

    If the parties used normal common sense instead of arguing all time we might have a successful government you’ve got one trying to please the rich and the other making all sorts of promises for the poor when we know once they are in number 10 they will conveniently forget what they promise we need a party that will look after everyone in the country regardless of disability wealth poverty they are treating us like school children if you don’t find a job with in 2 interviews your benefits are stopped whoopie you would think they gave you a fortune the drop from normal wages to esa is an absolute disgrace and don’t forget we have worked and put into the system but when you need help they give you the least amount they can get away with both parties are a disgrace to our country

    Let's be clear Starmer is a red Tory who will be just as harsh towards disabled claimants as the blue Tories. His economic policies offer yet more austerity to this nation. If Labour stay within the spending plans outlined by Hunt then we will have cuts to disability benefits. There is a huge spending black hole in public finances which Labour has no solution for. Never mind the fact that Starmer has no compassion for ordinary people he lies at every turn thinking we are too stupid to see that he is an inveterate liar. We need as many independents and Greens elected in the election as possible to challenge the Toryism of the next Labour government which could well be the most right wing Labour government in history.

    I think a Labour government will be less harsh on disabled benefit claimants.
    They will still want to try and reduce the Benefits’ budget, and I think they will also introduce more back to work schemes for disabled benefit claimants.
    I hope that any changes will be fairer, clearer and transparent. Good support must be a priority in helping people who have needs, get back into the workforce if it’s appropriate.

    I had been a life long labour supporter but their policies and stance on issues have become aligned more and more with conservative values than Labour ever have been. That Labour haven't said anything against the constant Tory attacks on disabled people through the benefit system, should be a warning to voters. I vote for the green party now, across the board their policies are humane and sustainable especially when it comes to us disabled people.

    Everything i've read and heard so far in my mind there is NO difference between the Tories/Labour. In fact with Streeting calling for even more private health i can see an insurance system coming in next 10 years or so and because benefits are poor compered to average income, a lot more disabled will join the 1 million+ PREMATURE deaths since 2010. (ONS figures)

    It matters not who wins. Disabled have no voice and our votes won’t matter. We are considered an unnecessary cost to the majority of voters. I do agree with the child benefit cap though. People have large families through personal choice and shouldn’t expect the government to subsidise them.

    Both parties are as bad as each other didn’t vote for Sunak certainly will not be voting for Starmer after Labour virtually bankrupted the country last time they were in power, Both parties are out of touch with normal people

    I've no belief in the Tories and very little in Labour as they clamour for votes of right wing as they morph into Neu New Labour. Lib Dems or Greens for me.

    After having suffered the persecution by the Tories and being treated worse than criminals for the past 14 years just to claim for our needs, I doubt that any other Party could be so callous against the truly disabled community.

    I have 2 sons who both have diagnosis of Autistic Syndrome Disorder, inc severe anxiety and depression.  My eldest claims PIP and on universal credit but my younger son doesn't claim for either his anxiety is far higher so going to interviews at job centre etc is not an option for him so we support him financially, he's 20! From a very early age in both their lives we've had to plough through going to Dr/specialist appointments to get diagnosed and even then dealing with daily struggles like school/college issues. Things that poeple who have kids without special needs don't understand. It takes a lot out of you the constant fighting for help/info etc. So really truly hoping that the Labour Party, if get in stands up for our disabled poeple, people who didn't ask for their disabilities and I believe would, if able to be like "normal" as much as I hate that term but that's how it's seen. I would love my boys to live their lives freely, independently and happy and carefree, but it won't happen. And once myself and hubby have gone our daughter (middle child) will have to be their career as well as a sister. It's a hard life for all when looking after/living with family with disabilities, extra needs. Good luck to us all, keeping everything crossed for all.

      @Ali Yes I was born with a Disability and I never asked for. I was born without a Thyroid Gland and the Specialist did not find out till I was 13 months old when all the damage was done I was left with some Brain Damage and learning disabilities and other Health problems. And as I have got a lot older I have had 4 Strokes Asthma, Depression and Anxiety  and Osteoarthritis  and just found out I have got 2 White Mast on the bottom off my Spine. And I get some people who keep saying it is all in my Mind and I need a good kick up my Arse and that I love being in Hospital  and that I love all the attention from the Doctors. And sometimes I really feel like taking my own life all together.  As this person keeps saying I am costing the NHS a lot off money and plus wasting their time . Like I had 2 Silent Strokes in 2020 and another one the following year and now I cannot see out off my left eye any more plus I also got fluid behind my left eye. And this person keeps saying that I have not had any Strokes at all they think they know it all and no they are not medically trained, and I am so fed up with it that now I have now stopped taking my medication for the Strokes, and I really hope I have another Stroke and it kills me as I really would be better off Dead. And the future does not look very good at all who ever gets in. They will be picking on all the Disabled and Mentally ill and old people. I will not be voting for any off them as they are just as bad as each other, I never trust any off them full stop, they are trying to kill us by stopping PiP and ESA and UC and other different Benefit, s.

      I fully agree with your comments. In exactly same boat.

      All parties including Labour view people on (disability) benefits with suspicion and burden on tax payers. Many politicians make political capital of bashing claimants. It goes down well with some. I just feel that people claiming benefits will become more stigmatised whoever is in political control and vulnerable people who need help the most will be any easy target to cut-off as they will struggle with the 'system' such as not being able to express themselves fully (with autistic children can't) and struugle with communication and everything online.
