Hi can anyone enlighten me as to what the regulations say needing social support to engage with people would mean and in what circumstances this descriptor might be given.

Thankyou for all your help

Have a look at the PIP Claim guide, the legal definitions of Mixing With Other People and Social Support are included.

IO - Informal Observations
MSE - Muscular Skeletal Examination or Mental State Examination usually the latter

I think that's unfair of them to say that about her getting help. My mum is agoraphobic along with personality disorder. She has been all my 37 years. She initially saw people when I was a child but as the years have gone on she became more reclusive and is basically on another planet tbh. There is something else wrong with her mentally now. She won't see or speak to anyone though. After a spell in hospital for her COPD they obviously saw how bad she is and then we had social workers and pshyciatrists up to the house to see her. She saw them twice and the physichiatrist she saw even admitted this was beyond his ability to diagnose. He said it was like she was in child like state. He wanted to involve someone more specialised to diagnose her. Third visit came and she wouldn't see them.

Since then we have begged the doctor for help as it's getting so hard looking after her but he says it's her own choice. She has been on DLA years and when it comes to changing to PIP they will obviously see for themselves what she is like but how can they panalise you for not getting help when you are in such a state that you cannot engage with people. Even if I ask her a simple question I am met with no response at all. She hides in her bedroom with the curtains closed and light off 24.7.

I can understand yours and your sisters situation totally. I honestly think my mother should be entitled to the high rates for eveything as she will not even wash or eat unless I do it for her. Sorry to weigh in on your thread but your sisters situation sounds similar to my mums. I am dreading having to apply for PIP for her.

Just an update on my pip journey or should I say my sister's journey. Received decision today, awarded standard care and no mobility and although the assessor suggested a 2 year review dm has awarded ongoing award which is fantastic as I don't think my sister would have agreed to another assessment. My dilemma is should I ask for a review as I truly believe she should have scored 10 for mobility as she can't leave house even to go to doctor. She couldn't go to her mothers funeral and she only goes out once a month for a run in the car. I found some notes which say dwp guidance to health professionals which states if someone is unable to leave the house on the majority of times they should be awarded 13e 10 points. We explained this and made it clear that support and encouragement doesn't help. The doctor confirmed she has been unable to visit the surgery for over 40 years. The assessor still chose 13b needs prompting. I would also like to thank everyone for their help in my journey so far. I have spoken to a cab advisor and she says she believes the points she scored for care look safe. Do you have any thoughts on how safe her review period is especially as it is so far away from what the assessor advised. Any thoughts welcome
