The government have introduced a service which, amongst other things, allows you to check the rate and length of your benefits award and download proof of entitlement.  It is particularly useful at the moment for claimants who want to check their personal independence payment (PIP) award to see if they have been given an extension.

You can get proof for:

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for adults
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - all types
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) - all types
  • Pension Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension

The service doesn’t cover universal credit.

And you can’t use the service if you are an appointee.

Once you’ve registered, you can get the information straight away and download the letter to your device or you can ask for it to be posted to you, but this will take about a week.

To use the service go to the Get proof of your benefits and State Pension page on the gov.uk site.

You’ll then be taken to a page where you can either sign in with your gov.uk One Login if you already have an account or create one if you don’t.

There are various ways to create a account.  The simplest is probably to use a valid photo id such as a passport or driving licence and a smartphone.

But if you don’t have those, you may still be able to register using a bank or building society account details and your national insurance number.

Once you have registered and logged in you’ll be able to check your benefits.

But for those of you checking if your PIP award has been extended, please be aware that this is a process that could go on for some weeks at least.  So, just because it hasn’t been extended yet doesn’t mean it definitely won’t be.

We'll provide more information as soon as we have it. To make sure you know what is happening, sign up for our free, fortnightly newsletter.

Many thanks to site member Healthyme for alerting us to this service.

Update 9 July

From the comments below it looks like the number of people checking the One Login site has caused it to struggle.  Some people are getting blank pages and some are being told that they don't have any awards. Please don't be alarmed, it's just the DWP failing to realise that if they start altering hundreds of thousands of PIP awards, then people are going to use whatever means are available to see if they are affected.

Does indefinite mean it won’t be reviewed again? It was for until 2028, but now says indefinite.

@Martin Gliddon Indefinite means: not exact or not clear; without clear limits: Indefinite. Bummer!

Mine has changed from 'ongoing' with a caveat that they would likely review in 10 years from 2021 to just 'ongoing' no mention of a review.  I'm 70 this year and, like Dave Eggleton, have been concerned if I will have this fight all over again when I'm 75 or wondering if I'll be like a friend who is just 80 and still on DLA,  who now no longer has reviews.

@suebeattie Strange that yours still says ongoing when it was ongoing before yet some peoples ongoing are now saying indefinite. Wondering whether some people are going to get indefinite awards and it hasn’t been announced yet. Myself I had an ongoing now changed to indefinite but I have what is classed as incurable progressive Parkinson’s. I don’t mean to be rude and tell me to mind my own business if you want but what health condition are you awarded pip for it to remain ongoing? I only ask as I wonder if there is a pattern of who and for what are getting their ongoings changed to indefinite and who’s are remaining the same.

I have read through all comments and articles regarding PIP award letters and have yet to see the word 'ongoing'? Lots of set dates and indefinites but not 'ongoing' has anyone else had this?

@Heather My award letter at home says ongoing until 2030 then a light touch review, online it now says indefinite. Are some ongoings being replaced with indefinite’s for life long degenerative conditions?

@Lawrence Bell Mine is ongoing, I often wonder what this means exactly. I am now turned 70 and retired from active employment therefore in receipt of state pension. To not know what might happen in the future is vey disconcerting.

Just registered using passport number and bank details; turned down the option of using the app and having a photo taken. Took a while to confirm questions but all smooth. Downloaded PIP letter and it says 2028, I was sure it was originally 2027 expiry.

More importantly, it worked for someone over here in NI! That's often not the case on these helpful things.

    Hope that helps.

      @Gary Gary
I'm so sorry to hear your plight
It's shameful that you are treated in this way, living with such a critical health issue. I hope and pray for a speedy positive outcome.
I'm on PIP too and have gone through my first ever review process and am waiting to hear the outcome. I have had a telephone review call from Capita and a recent text message to say I might have to have a medical review. It's shockingly brutal what people have to face and go through to be awarded PIP which has been put in place to help support people.

@Sandee Yes, you have to call them (waiting ages for an agent to answer). I did this because my conditions detreated. I had to do a full reassessment and was awarded nothing. I did a reconsider and still awarded nothing. Then an appeal which resulted in an offer (before an actual hearing). The award was the same as I was originally on so I appealed again because the DWP used unlawful reasons for not providing the full award. Finally (again before a hearing) the DWP gave me an indefinite award, both high tier. Madness!

Good luck in trying to give them updated information. Be prepared for a fight.

and then i went back onto the site and downloaded the letter, and it says when i got it, (2019) "for an indefinite period"  so that could be at anytime they will/can review me.... or no time - that's not good, it's makes me start to worry even more !   I'm 58, so a long way from retirement, i had a stroke when i was 49 so my emotional lability is very high still.  It might be ok to know when to expect a review, but when they say "indefinite period" that has just put me on edge now

@Louise Yes, I had a similar wording in my letter. Mine said 'ongoing period'? Again it's a vague terminology. I understand your concern.

My pip was renewed last March for 6 years no change.  Must add initially in 2008 under dla was given a lifetime award changed when changed to pip and kept being 3 years at one point in 2018 I lost my mobility from full to regular and so lost my car I pretty much became housebound other than people picking me up taxi home deliveries etc and my care was dropped to standard  The next renewal my mobility was reinstated but care stayed at middle rate so last year was relieved to see a 6 year one  it’s so stressful worrying all the time. I’m worried now as it’s till March 31 I will be 65 mid March 2031 do 2 years till retirement what happens then will i lose it??

@Lilly If you are getting PIP at retirement, it will continue post retirement. If you are NOT receiving PIP at retirement date, you are not allowed to apply for PIP post retirement date.

@Chazy What about a bus pass? That has a photo.  LIke you I don't have a passport. I never renewed it and have had problems on various sites. I do have a photo driving licence but some places won't accept that such as blue badge.

@Onyx123 I will not be doing that either. I don’t have a passport as I can’t travel, I don’t have a driving license, never had one. So it looks like I will be barred from looking online because I am not prepared to use a photograph. I wouldn’t mind but I have been on the Electoral role, with my bank, same name and at the same address for 45 years. I can give my NI number, date of birth, mothers Maiden name, first school and on and on yet I have never been able to get past the ID stage for the Gov gateway thing. I even phoned them for help to open a gateway but the woman I spoke to said she had the exact same problem and she worked for them !! What a farce, excluded again.

I get pip, i could check when i was paid, how much i got, my personal details and if i wanted a copy of my award - there is nothing on there to "check the rate and length of your benefits award" whatsoever, i ordered another copy of my award, maybe it'll be on that ?

@Louise I had a similar experience. I asked for a download copy of the proof of award letter and that is where I found out the length of the award.

I did have a set date, some way off (can remember when) but now is saying indefinite.

Tried registering for this and had to take my driving licence into one of the post offices that do "in-branch verification" because I don't want to install their app (after looking at the information they'll have access to on my phone).  I took me a huge effort to get into the town, only to be told that the ID has been rejected and to refer back, even though they could see nothing wrong with it.  I have no idea how to contact the Govt about this.

@Surfmonkey Go on a laptop/computer rather than a phone app. The website lets you create an account without photo id.

@Surfmonkey I tried the Gov helpline and guess what it’s useless !! The woman I spoke to can’t get one for herself, she had no idea how to get around the ID problems, she had found it as frustrating as me and she works for them !!! What hope do we have ? Excluded once more.

I am massively scared to go check. The whole thing sends me into physical churning and deep anxiety every time I think about it. I don't have anyone to ask to support me. Any tips? An extension would be wonderful especially since the last communication from DWP (just before the appeal date) did not specify an end date. It just said "ongoing" which neither the (free) solicitor or citizens advice could explain...

@pipsqueak Mine says indefinite which is just as vague. I take it to mean  they will leave me alone  unless the rules change o  r t hey have a  good reason  to try to alter it. I assume they finally realised after years of      getting only 2 yrs allowed, they finally realised                   I'm not going to improve.
