The government have introduced a service which, amongst other things, allows you to check the rate and length of your benefits award and download proof of entitlement.  It is particularly useful at the moment for claimants who want to check their personal independence payment (PIP) award to see if they have been given an extension.

You can get proof for:

  • Attendance Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for adults
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - all types
  • Income Support
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) - all types
  • Pension Credit
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • State Pension

The service doesn’t cover universal credit.

And you can’t use the service if you are an appointee.

Once you’ve registered, you can get the information straight away and download the letter to your device or you can ask for it to be posted to you, but this will take about a week.

To use the service go to the Get proof of your benefits and State Pension page on the gov.uk site.

You’ll then be taken to a page where you can either sign in with your gov.uk One Login if you already have an account or create one if you don’t.

There are various ways to create a account.  The simplest is probably to use a valid photo id such as a passport or driving licence and a smartphone.

But if you don’t have those, you may still be able to register using a bank or building society account details and your national insurance number.

Once you have registered and logged in you’ll be able to check your benefits.

But for those of you checking if your PIP award has been extended, please be aware that this is a process that could go on for some weeks at least.  So, just because it hasn’t been extended yet doesn’t mean it definitely won’t be.

We'll provide more information as soon as we have it. To make sure you know what is happening, sign up for our free, fortnightly newsletter.

Many thanks to site member Healthyme for alerting us to this service.

Update 9 July

From the comments below it looks like the number of people checking the One Login site has caused it to struggle.  Some people are getting blank pages and some are being told that they don't have any awards. Please don't be alarmed, it's just the DWP failing to realise that if they start altering hundreds of thousands of PIP awards, then people are going to use whatever means are available to see if they are affected.

I was so happy to see this as an option to check as been living in absolute terror of the envelope for over a year, I have no idea if they have extended it. I am too frightened to contact them, I think my award was due to end in September this year. I thought this was my savour. I have no photo ID, so did the whole bank info route, put everything in correct, at the end it told me I entered in incorrect information, which I didn't, you don't get to try again, so thats it, my only option is to wait for the dreaded envelope, or contact them as I am now not able to try and verify myself again. I am in tears and gutted. I wish they knew the level of distress people are under.

@Frances Thank you for taking the time to reply and give advice, it's very kind of you. I am so scared of contacting them after having very negative experiences in the last 10 years, a bit of PTSD I think. So I will wait to see if anything arrives shortly. But I do know if nothing does there will be a time I will have to get help from someone to contact them. Thanks again for your advice and help.

@Jay @Jay My post was cut short. Things they could ask for on the phone are bank details, phone numbers, other benefits you might be on. Prepare what you want to ask them, and have someone with you if you think that would help. Best of luck.

@Jay @Jay Honestly it's not so bad if you phone pip. Call right on 9am and you'll get through quickly. Have your NI number ready. It doesn't work like One login, so if you get something wrong they just ask a different security question.

I spotted this last week in the comments. Following a text message from the DWP, it saved me waiting 2 weeks for a letter to tell me the result of my review. Awarded 6 years. Why be so cruel as to text and say a letter in 14 days?

The Independent are saying that Alan Millburn has had a discussion with Andy Burnham and he is up for Welfare Reform.

@LionHeartCook What's that got to do with this topic? People read this to avoid the churnalism of our rage bait media and just get what's relevant.

Can you create a account or log in if you already have a Government Gateway?

The reason i ask, is simple i would NEVER EVER trust any government, and  no digital id for me.

I was originally awarded standard daily living PIP in September 2022. This was rewarded last August for three years, until August 2028. I'm 30 years old. It hasn't been extended yet. Does this mean it definitely won't be?

What evidence are you basing the claim this could take weeks?

I hope it's correct, but I've not seen anything but hearsay regarding this.

As I mentioned before, in February of this year (2026) I finished my PIP re-assessment and got my award letter, I was awarded PIP until February 2030. I checked my GOV one account today and I haven't had an extension added to my award. My award end date is still Feb 2030.. So sick and tired of these constant assessments for something that has been a lifelong issue and will never improve.

@thelux You haven't got an extension because you have a 4 year award. Extensions are being granted to free up staff, kicking the can down the road. You are a winner, you're not in limbo. Be happy. I also received an award, no extension.

I wonder why you can't check your review date for WCA, if you are on UC, on this site?

As it stands you have to send a message in your journal to your Case Manager stating:

Could you please tell me the recommended review date set for my LCW/LCWRA status?

Wouldn't this be something that could be done successfully by A. I.?

After all, they are always banging  on about the cost of the welfare Bill.

I found that despite having a passport it wouldn’t accept it. I had to go to a post office which was pretty straightforward to prove my identity. Apparently if you have a smartphone it is much easier. Mine is a bog standard phone. You’ll get a letter either in post or online or both. Show this at the post office (not all post offices offer the service) they will scan it, check the ID such as passport that you have to take with you and they will take you somewhere in the shop have you stand up against a wall (!!!)……. and take your photo.

Worth mentioning if you already have an HMRC account where you can see your pension details you won’t see them on the One account until presumably the HMRC pension account is closed down.
